Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding gives your baby the best start in live. It is the most natural and healthy way to feed your baby. Breastfeeding also has positive effects on your body. It helps to limit blood loss after giving birth and speeds up the process of postpartum weight loss.

BabyCare carry out a policy that protects, supports and promotes breastfeeding. We are WHO/UNICEF certified. Every year our maternity nurses are re-trained to assist you with finding the best way to achieve successful breastfeeding. Furthermore, BabyCare works closely with lactation experts.

During the intake interview, breastfeeding assistance will be discussed. Please feel free to put forward any queries you might have, we are here to help! You can also prepare yourself for breastfeeding by taking a breastfeeding course. The midwife will be able to tell you where these courses are available or you can look yourself on the website of ‘vereniging borstvoeding natuurlijk’ or ‘la leche league’.

The advantages of Breastfeeding

  • The first milk, the colostrum, coats the intestinal wall with a protective layer and promotes a favourable intestinal flora
  • Breast milk is easily digested
  • Breast milk contains antibodies that ward off against infections (respiratory, intestinal, ear)
  • Breastfeeding lowers the chances of developing allergies
  • Breastfeeding ensures the absorption of iron in the blood
  • Breastfeeding gives the baby a feeling of comfort and safety
  • Breastfeeding helps in the baby’s jaw development
  • With breastfeeding, there is more skin on skin contact, which helps the mother and child to bond
  • Breastfeeding is readily available, correct temperature, top quality and easy to give
  • Children who were breastfed have better brain development
  • Breastfeeding reduces the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
  • Later in life, children who were breastfed have lower risk of heart and vascular disease, insulin dependent diabetes, chronic intestinal illness and obesity
  • There are barely any costs for breastfeeding, it is free
  • Breastfeeding helps the mother to get back to her pre-baby weight in a natural way
  • A mother who breastfeeds her child for longer periods minimizes her chances of getting breast and cervical cancer, and has less trouble with osteoporosis than women with the same number of children who did not breastfeed.

Breastfeeding Organisations

There are two volunteer organisations in The Netherlands that provide information about breastfeeding.  Based on their own personal experience, the staff of mothers will come in contact with women who want to breastfeed their children. They can provide other mothers with a variety of practical answers to their questions, and can help them feel more confident.
